Agent memory needs an interface
Memory creates continuity, but invisible memory creates unease. Trust begins when people can inspect, correct, and bound what the product remembers.
APP MY AGENT · August 15, 2026Memory is not one thing
Product teams often describe memory as a single capability. For users, it is a set of different commitments: facts they stated, preferences inferred from behavior, temporary working context, and records required for the product to function. Those classes deserve different lifetimes and controls.
Show memory at the moment it matters
A separate settings page is necessary but insufficient. When memory changes a recommendation, the interface should reveal the relevant context and offer a lightweight correction. This makes personalization legible without turning every interaction into a privacy tutorial.
Give forgetting a real meaning
Delete, forget, pause, and private mode should have precise behavior. Users need to know whether data disappears from future recommendations, the visible product history, connected systems, or all of the above.
Design principle
The agent should never appear to know something the user cannot account for. Good memory UX makes continuity feel earned rather than uncanny.
